Abstract

Octahedral hexatantalum halide clusters usually exist as extended structures of the form Ta 6 (μ‐X) 12 X 2 . These clusters consist of six tantalums linked through Ta‐Ta bonding to form a Ta 6 octahedron, with a halide bridge along each of the 12 octahedral edges and one terminal ligand (halide, water) located apically on each tantalum. This chapter presents an extension of reduction methodology to the convenient preparation of Ta 6 (μ‐X) 12 X 2 (OH 2 ) 4 .4H 2 O by reduction of TaX 5 with gallium dichloride. It describes the straightforward preparation of a tetraalkylammonium derivative of the [Ta 6 (μ‐Cl) 12 Cl 6 ] 4 − anion that has solubility in a broader array of organic solvents than the aquated clusters. In particular, the chapter discusses the preparation of tetradecachlorohexatantalum octahydrate and tetradecabromohexatantalum octahydrate.
