Abstract
Open common bile duct (CBD) exploration was historically a commonly performed operation. However, the development of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic sphincterotomy has dramatically reduced the need for open CBD exploration. While many surgical residents training today are performing laparoscopic CBD explorations, many have never performed an open CBD exploration. This chapter provides the indications, essential steps, variations in techniques, and potential complications of this operation. The chapter concludes with a complete operative note dictation template.
