Abstract

This chapter discusses the need as well as the challenges in providing appropriate analgesia to the trauma patient; including special considerations in assessment, choice of analgesia and routes of administration. We discuss in addition to opioid and non opioid analgesics, neuropathic medications used in the setting of trauma. Regional anaesthetic options and techniques are described as well as options for truncal analgesia in a patient with thoracic trauma. While the incidence of chronic pain after polytrauma and burns is high, the chapter reviews the risks factors that are predictive of this.
