Abstract
Parent training teaches parents and other caregivers skills to increase their child’s engagement in adaptive behaviors and positive interactions with others, and to decrease their child’s engagement in disruptive behaviors. Parent training is a process that is not specific to one particular procedure. Rather, it includes a continuum of evidence-based treatments that range from manualized to individualized programs with each program requiring different levels of parent and child involvement. Parent training is evidence-based and essential for effective treatment programs across the care continuum. However, parent training is underutilized, with providers lacking expertise in its delivery being one major contributing factor. Each parent training model may be appropriate depending on various factors such as program goals, provider characteristics and qualifications, and parent and child characteristics. Thus, a comprehensive parent training approach is likely to include all three parent training models at different points in time and dosages.
