Abstract

Relationships between humans and animals allow for direct or indirect transmission of infectious diseases, termed zoonoses. As an increasing number of people live with companion animals, health care professionals and pet owners should be aware of pertinent zoonotic agents and the human populations that are at risk for infection. In this article, we review selected zoonotic bacterial, viral, fungal, helminth, and protozoal diseases that infect companion animals, found consistently in developed countries with high standards for veterinary and human health care. The molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis for these diseases are reviewed.
