Abstract
This chapter reviews the cellular basis of seizure activity and the factors that enhance the susceptibility of the immature brain to seizures and epilepsy. We emphasize how dysfunction of ion channels and synaptic transmission can lead to cellular hyperexcitability and hypersynchronous neuronal firing, the hallmark pathophysiological features of seizures. Rationale is provided for the concept that a seizure results when there is excessive excitation and/or decreased inhibition in some aspect of neuronal function. Mechanisms of action of antiseizure medications are also summarized.
