Abstract
The United States and Canada have agreed to design Lakewide Management plans for each of the five Great Lakes. The agreement stipulated that the LaMPs would include an evaluation of the concentrations, sources, and pathways of persistent toxic substances in the Great Lakes System. In Lake Ontario, there is not a wealth of chemical concentration of flux data to support these requirements. Unfortunately, there is little data on the concentrations of persistent pesticides, PCBs and other organochlorines in the lake and in air over the lake, limiting the ability to accurately predict loads, atmospheric and otherwise. In this poster, we present preliminary results of recent 1997 and 1998 cruises on Lake Ontario, where air and water samples were collected simultaneously and analyzed for a suite persistent organic compounds. Using this data annual atmospheric net exchange is estimated. This work will be used to support an effort to construct a whole lake mass balance model for persistent organic compounds in Lake Ontario.
