Abstract
The distinction between positive and negative symptoms was originally proposed by Hughlings-Jackson, who conceptualized these symptoms in terms of an evolutionary and hierarchical theory of brain structure. Interest in this distinction smoldered quietly for many years, but recently enthusiasm for conceptualizing the psychopathology of schizophrenia in terms of positive and negative symptoms has rekindled vigorously. The reawakening of interest in this distinction has occurred largely because many investigators believe that it may lead to improved methods of classification, assist in predicting response to treatment and outcome, and ultimately improve our understanding of the underlying brain pathology in this illness.
