Abstract
This chapter examines the multidisciplinary field of media production studies, which examines how media texts get made, who stamps their authorial imprint on them, and who has the opportunity to consume them. Also known as "media industry studies," "cultural industry studies," and "production of culture" studies, the methodological approaches in this field includes administrative research, which is conducted by or for industry sponsors; interpretive work that seeks to understand why various production activities function as they do; and critical research that addresses the following theoretical questions: What role does the production and dissemination of media play in the constitution of individual and group identities? How do changes in technology alter media production and its social significance? What is the impact of the industry on the diversity of media output? And what is the industry's impact on the creative autonomy of workers?
