Abstract
The practice of psychotherapy by psychiatrists has been declining for decades despite the evidence of its efficacy and ongoing training requirements for psychiatry residency programs in the United States to demonstrate that their graduates are competent to provide psychotherapy. This chapter outlines the history of psychotherapy training in US psychiatry residency programs, reviews training requirements, and discusses approaches for building a comprehensive psychotherapy training program. It also outlines resources available to programs to train residents in supportive, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic psychotherapies.
