Abstract
The practice of psychotherapy by psychiatrists has been on the decline for decades despite the evidence of its efficacy and the ongoing training requirements for psychiatry residency programs in the United States. This chapter outlines the history of psychotherapy training in US psychiatry residency programs, reviews training requirements, discusses approaches for building a comprehensive psychotherapy training program, and outlines resources that are available to assist training programs with this important endeavor.
