Abstract
This chapter introduces the reader to the many and diverse ways in which scholars have leveraged quantitative analyses and formal modeling to better understand international relations (IR). It examines early and long-standing data collection efforts; innovations in data collection and variable measurement techniques; ordinary least squares regression, and a broad range of more sophisticated statistical models and approaches that manage temporal, spatial, and relational dependencies commonly found in the complexities of global politics; three types of formal modeling - game theory, dynamic modeling, and agent-based modeling; and mixed methods analyses. Each section explains the circumstances under which each might be particularly useful, notes potential pitfalls, and provides hallmark and recent examples of their applications. Scholars can use the chapter's discussion and rich bibliographic material to choose the quantitative or formal approaches that best suit their research questions, topics, and data constraints.
