Abstract
This self-study describes the procedures undertaken in one world language teacher education program in adapting and developing assignments to provide a more systematic set of formative assessments that prepare teacher candidates for the edTPA. The research questions ask how the changes in the formative assessments were conceptualized, how they were implemented, and what challenges and successes occurred during the implementation. Three assignments from one teacher education class are examined in detail: teacher candidates' observation journals, their interviews with their cooperating teachers, and their video-recorded microteachings. These three assignments are traced across their original versions, followed by a review of the decisions made in revising them to prepare the teacher candidates for the edTPA, and ending with a description of their eventual implementation. Data sources include course materials, meeting notes, and reflections from the course instructors. Findings offer insights into how teacher candidates struggled with connecting theory to practice, how they can be encouraged to move from the general to more specific reflections, and how formative assessments can be used to help teacher educators adjust instruction to meet the needs of the teacher candidates.
