Abstract
Although originally reserved as an alternative therapy to extirpative surgery in patients at increased surgical risk or advanced age, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is now an acceptable treatment modality for small renal masses (<4 cm) with excellent intermediate to long‐term oncologic outcomes. Tumor characteristics that are particularly amenable to percutaneous RFA include posterior location, diameter <3 cm, >0.5 cm from the ureteropelvic junction or renal pelvis, and >1 cm from surrounding bowel. Ultimately, the decision to treat a small renal mass with RFA should be determined on an individual patient basis and by shared decision‐making.
