Abstract
In the first decade of the twentieth century an unnamed Yuchi informant told the ethnologist Frank Speck that the Yuchi, orcoyaha, “came from the sun.” In contrast, “the Shawnee came from above. The Creeks came from the ground, [and] the Choctaws came from the water.” The four tribes eventually met and “mingled together in friendship … smoked together … and held a council.” Initial conversations led them to consider a kind of multi-ethnic union. But after much contemplation, the Yuchi and their neighbors believed that it would be best for “each tribe going its own way and living alone.”¹
