Abstract
Within this work, the assumption challenged suggests that Egyptologists only study artifacts within the historical and archaeological contexts of ancient Egypt. Few studies are done on the function of Egyptian art and artifacts within contemporary artworks, and how this affects modern society in the West and Egypt. Ancient Egyptian art, as studied through the lens of the Nefertiti bust, functions as an active agent through which to convey social, political, and economic messages to those who witness the piece. The topic begins with a theoretical framework for the renewed role and identities of objects, and how they can convey new meanings. Then, examples of both Egyptian and Western contemporary artworks that incorporate the Nefertiti bust are discussed, with an emphasis on the messages they try to convey to different audiences.
