Abstract
Arterial baroreceptors in the carotid sinuses and aortic arch are stimulated by vascular stretch during increases in arterial pressure (Bronk and Stella, 1932, 1935; Kirchheim, 1976; Brown, 1980). The increased nerve activity is transmitted to the central nervous system (CNS) and triggers reflex excitation of parasympathetic and inhibition of sympathetic nerve activities that reduce heart rate and vascular resistance to buffer the increases in pressure (Kirchheim, 1976).
