Abstract
A growing body of work is focused on understanding audiences' engagement with various forms of misinformation that they encounter online. This chapter examines responses to misinformation in Kenya. It provides some background for understanding the misinformation context in Kenya. The chapter explores the Kenyan government's response to misinformation and examples of media literacy and fact‐checking efforts that have been launched in Kenya to address the spread of misinformation. It draws on focus groups and interviews with Kenyans to explore their responses to the misinformation they encounter and their views on who is responsible for stopping the spread of misinformation. The chapter examines Kenyans' perceptions of their own roles and responsibilities, with a particular focus on the strategies that people use to assess information quality on social media and to determine their response to social media posts and perceptions of the role and responsibility of the Kenyan government in the fight against misinformation.
