Abstract
Injuries are the leading cause of death in children, killing more children between the ages of 1 and 3
years than all other causes of death combined. This article is divided into three parts. First, epidemiological background on injury is reviewed, with an emphasis on the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among young children. Second, psychological risk factors for child injury, including risks associated with children, parents, daycare centers, communities, and culture are reviewed. Third, the major types of injuries young children incur, with discussion ranging from burns to dog bites to suffocation injuries are considered.
