Abstract
The evolution of the education and training of school counselors has progressed as the role of the school counselor, the profession of school counseling, and the educational enterprise have changed over the years. This chapter will give a brief historical review of school counselor training and practice during the past 100 years, commenting on the development of the profession and highlighting the major training developments during this period. The major objective of the chapter is to examine the theoretical and curricular frameworks of more recent school counselor training initiatives, including empirical evidence related to the impact of the educational programs that train school counselors. In conclusion, the chapter will suggest recommendations for the training of school counselors to maximize the effectiveness and impact of school counselors in the 21st century.
