Abstract
Main concepts of smart manufacturing such as digitization, service orientation, sustainability, resilience, openness, and integration are discussed. Manufacturing enterprises will deploy these concepts to a different degree. Digitization of manufacturing and the concept of a digital twin are highlighted. The success of manufacturing enterprises may depend on their presence in the cyberspace. The model-based system engineering approach facilitates development of digital models. Examples of such models derived based on different data streams are presented. Major initiatives in support of smart manufacturing such as cyber-physical systems, Industry 4.0, Society 5.0, Made in China 2025, and Manufacturing USA are introduced. A four-stage evolution of intelligent manufacturing is outlined. Autonomy of processes and decision-making is a key characteristic of smart manufacturing. The nature of collaborative efforts aimed at accelerating progress in smart manufacturing is presented.
