Abstract
While we often think of health and wellness being intrinsic to our biology, the health literature demonstrates just how social our health outcomes are. From social stressors and the meanings we make of them, to the social support we perceive and receive, the stigma we may face, and the structure of our social networks, our social lives have important ramifications for our health and the health of our societies. In this chapter, the authors highlight some of the important theoretical and empirical advancements in the social psychology of health, paying attention to both physical and mental health outcomes. They pay particular attention to social stress and the stress process model and social network effects on health outcomes, calling out how our roles, perceptions, prejudices, norms, and social statuses are part of these systems and practices
