Abstract
What kind of voices do villains possess? How are their voices constructed in contemporary Korean cinema? What is the relationship between the filmic image of villains and the sound that is associated with the villains? This chapter turns to an oft-neglected aspect of film studies-sound and voice-to explore Ryoo Seung-wan's depiction of villainy. This chapter examines the vocal quality and vocal style of villainous characters to see how the sonic aesthetics of contemporary Korean crime, thriller, or action films allow us to understand the state of contemporary South Korean society. More broadly, by framing Ryoo's films with sound studies and calling for new ways to conceptualise the often-taut relationship between the audio-visual, orality-literacy, and representation-indexicality, I work through the ways sound can lead us to modes of analysis that are not otherwise possible with visual analysis alone. The chapter highlights the broader range and depth of new trends in Korean cinema, but also calls for new ways to conceptualise voice and sound and their representations in the society at large-a society that is currently highly volatile due to economic disparities, social inequalities, and political instability.
