Abstract

Data are presented on the adult structure, the possible function and the development of the LHRH-immunoreactive nervus terminalis (NT)/nucleus olfacto-retinalis (NOR) system in cichlid fish. The results are compared with those on other vertebrates and the importance of olfaction for reproduction in vertebrates in general and in teleosts in particular is discussed. The authors suggest that the influence of olfaction on reproduction is mediated by the LHRH-immunoreactive NT/NOR system.
