Abstract
In this chapter, we start by reviewing some of the basic research by brain scientists who demonstrated the crucial role of emotions in decision making. We discuss how these demonstrations helped shape current dual-process theories of decision making. After describing a variety of simple laboratory tasks designed to uncover reactions to potential gains and losses, we focus on framing effects where objectively equivalent information presented in different frames has been shown to lead to substantially different preference ratings which are accompanied by different brain activation patterns. An array of multidisciplinary tools across a growing body of literature shows that framing effects play a fundamental role in decision making. In this chapter, we explore this recent research by showing how framing effects inform current dual-process theories that describe the complementary roles of cognition and emotion/affect. Studies include a variety of laboratory tasks amenable to brain-scanning, eye-tracking, biological rhythms, and lifespan developmental techniques. These tasks include variations of the framing paradigm that differentially tap into cognitive and affective processes. Ultimately, research of this type can help us understand both group differences and individual differences in decision making.
