Abstract
The leadership team of a secondary-level school usually includes principals and school counselors. Principals and counselors typically also deal holistically with students, concerned about student attitudes, family environment, student safety and wellness, and collective school climate. Superintendents establish local direction for education, and, in that important role, they can affect the viability of services for gifted students. The more superintendents in training learn about the complexity of gifted youth, the more likely they are to embrace the notion that, even when programming is not mandated, gifted students need an education appropriate to their ability and learning needs. Coursework to prepare school administrators includes considerable attention to school leadership. School administrators are responsible for creating and maintaining a school climate conducive to learning. "Giftedness" is a construct, not defined similarly across cultures, and not resonating at all with some cultures.
