Abstract
This chapter discusses the very visible resonances of Surrealist concepts and techniques in the art of the last seventy years. Though art historical narratives have often portrayed Surrealism as being surpassed and hence made obsolete by abstract expressionism, the often-unacknowledged influence of Surrealist praxis has continued to shape the work of artists from the abstract expressionists themselves to a wide range of experimental practitioners of hybridized methods and uncanny imagery, including Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Kienholz, Niki de Saint Phalle, the Chicago imagists Lucas Samaras, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Wangechi Mutu.
