Synthetic Musk Fragrances in Great Lakes Sediment

Abstract
Synthetic musk fragrances were introduced shortly after World War II as a less expensive alternative to natural fragrances. Over the past fifty years, production has greatly increased and today these synthetic musks are found in laundry detergent, soap, room fresheners and many other products. Along with the rising usage came rising concerns about the impact synthetic musks might have on the environment. Synthetic musks have been identified in water, air, and sediment throughout Europe and Japan; however, little information has been available for North America. To better understand the history of musk concentrations in the Great Lakes, sediment box cores were collected in Lakes Erie and Ontario in August 2003 aboard the U.S. EPA R/V Lake Guardian. The box cores were analyzed for seven synthetic musk compounds to determine historical trends in usage. Musks such as HHCB, AHTN, and musk ketone are retained in Great Lakes sediment, indicating that they are not readily degraded in the sediment.
