Abstract

Online telemental health has the potential to improve access to and quality of care for a broad range of underserved patients. This chapter addresses key issues regarding telemental health delivered through online videoconferencing technologies and elucidates some of the conditions under which telemental health is practiced optimally. The scope of this chapter includes the provision of mental health services provided by a licensed health care professional when using real-time videoconferencing services transmitted via the Internet. The chapter pertains to telemental health services when the initiating, receiving, or both provider and client are using a personal computer with a webcam or a mobile communications device (e.g., smartphone, laptop, tablet) with two-way camera capability. It presents two cases to illustrate the best of telemental health in providing effective patient-centered care. The case examples include assessing appropriateness and risks of telemental health in emergency protocols and asynchronous remote monitoring.
