Abstract
We discuss the emerging use of text analysis enabled by artificial intelligence for job analysis and job design purposes. Specifically, we discuss using natural language processing, which involves extracting the meaningfulness of narrative information by analyzing words and relationships among words. Job analysis is a process for collecting information on tasks and knowledge and skill requirements to develop job-related procedures for hiring, training, appraisal, compensation, and so on. We describe opportunities to leverage natural language processing to improve the methodological efficiency of job analysis and refer to exemplars in the literature. Although few studies have yet used natural language processing for job design research, we describe the potential for applications, outline the basic steps, and cite related research. The potential benefits of natural language processing include analyzing a new source of data (text), and doing so more objectively than qualitative methods, to identify new constructs, measure them more precisely, and save researcher and respondent effort.
