Six weeks prior to the cable sports television network ESPN’s September 7, 1979, launch,Sports Illustratedmedia critic William O. Johnson speculated on the outlet’s potential impact. “ESPN,” he claimed, “may become the biggest thing in TV sports sinceMonday Night Footballand night-time World Series games.” ESPN—the self-dubbed “Worldwide Leader in Sports” that a 2012 Forbes report named the world’s most valuable media property—has met and surpassed Johnson’s prophecy.
