So beginsQuarry Ghost, the last novel written by Mildred Wirt Benson. The book was published in 1959 by Dodd, Mead, and Co., although it almost didn’t make it into print. A letter written by Benson to her publisher reads in part:
Dear Miss Bryan:
I have an idea which may salvage quarry ghost. The entire book will have to be rewritten, but all swim scenes and characters could be saved, pretty much the same chapter arrangement kept and same interchange between characters which I would need for any successful re-write….
