Abstract
The nonstandard use of the gerund in the Spanish of the North Andean region of Columbia & Ecuador is discussed in the context of the contact since 1532 with Quechua. According to field research, gerundive periphrases have been extended to the domains of past participles, imperatives, & conjugated verb forms to serve a variety of functions. Examples discussed are dar 'to give' + gerund, used to soften a command; dejar 'to leave' + gerund, which seems equivalent to past participle use; venir 'to come' + gerund, with different semantic interpretations than the form found in standard use; mandar 'to send' + gerund, indicating a scolding or dismissal; & poner 'to put' + gerund, which replaces a simple past verb + adverbial clause. 1 Figure, 31 References.
