Abstract

This chapter reviews more than twenty years of peer-reviewed fit research from the perspectives of applicants and recruiters. Through a narrative review of primary studies and existing meta-analyses, it concludes that applicants’ and recruiters’ assessments of fit play an important role in organizational entry. Although recruiters and applicants attend to explicit and implicit cues to form perceptions of person–job and person–organization fit, perceptions of fit are not consistently accurate. Recent research provides insight into how influence tactics and the characteristics of information sources and can affect fit assessments, but there is much yet to be understood about how best to use this information to improve decision making during organizational entry. The chapter concludes with directions for future research that could help to improve the accuracy of fit judgments and their use as criteria for decision making.
