Abstract
The landscape of penetrating pediatric injury will vary depending on the community in which you practice surgery. In countries plagued by civil strife and political unrest, children get caught up in the vortex of violence and are injured by bullets and shrapnel from explosives. However, even in wealthy countries with stable governments children fall victim to gun violence both as bystanders and as targets. The pattern of injury in children may be similar to that seen in adult victims but are often much more severe due to the greater injuring capacity of weapons on such small bodies. Expedient treatment of the injured child can be life-saving.
