Abstract
The place of politics & political stances in the teaching of English as a second language (ESL) is considered. It is argued that politics exist in both the academic & nonacademic contexts of ESL, & examples of political pedagogy are provided. Attention is given to the political stances taken by instructors in response to their students' writings, specifically separatist, accommodationist, & assimilationist stances. Reactions to student texts illustrating these stances are presented. It is concluded that since ESL & politics cannot be separated, ESL's political nature should be made explicit. 1 Table, 3 Appendixes, 36 References. D. Weibel
