Abstract
R is a computing environment for data analysis and graphics. R is designed as a high-level programming language that supports complex forms of data analysis as well as the development of new data analysis methodology. In recent years R has become the major framework for providing access to new statistical methodology, and thousands of extension packages are now available. This paper provides a brief introduction to R with examples drawn from astronomical data.
