Abstract
Bilingualism research has invested in identifying various advantages of being bilingual. The failure of replication of these findings is often interpreted as a bilingual disadvantage. Here, we seek to question current bilingualism research practices from a social justice perspective so as to achieve a more meaningful, more inclusive, and more responsive research. Specifically, the present chapter argues that research on bilingualism tends to overlook sociolinguistic approaches and erase the main actors from the picture. The chapter provides an overview of the linguistic stigmatization that heritage speakers face due to ongoing societal monolingual ideologies. Subsequently, the chapter maintains that research that does not account for societal injustice lacks the ethical responsibility to objectively examine heritage bilinguals' positionality in bilingualism research. Therefore, claiming the disadvantage rhetoric for already minoritized communities is a far cry from linguistic justice and perpetuates further stigma toward bilingualism.
