Abstract
Discerning how users navigate health information systems (HIS) adoption and acceptance processes is central to positive health outcomes. Thus, a comprehensive, theory- and evidence-driven understanding of eHealth literacy, and one that provides a nuanced understanding of its antecedents across diverse populations, would provide an excellent foundation for HIS research. Our technological capital model blends critical cultural and social scientific perspectives and integrates multiple theoretical bodies of inquiry: Marxist theory of capital within capitalism, technology adoption, information management and privacy, and the digital divide. Applying a technological capital metaphor facilitates the macro-level examination necessary to account for how digital access, privilege, and oppression influence HIS innovation adoption and use. Rather than situating technological use and adoption processes as the responsibility of individuals alone, our model highlights how institutions, communities, and larger social structures facilitate and constrain HIS adoption and use, and it identifies spaces through which to address issues in the way that eHealth literacy is conceptualized currently.
