Abstract
This chapter reports on a study that tested the effect of two types of explicit form-focused instruction, a prototype instruction (PI) and a traditional grammar instruction (TI), on the acquisition of progressive and resultative meanings of imperfective -teiru by second language (L2) learners of Japanese. Using interpretation matching tests, learners ' interpretation of -teiru constructions was measured three times (pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest). While a significant improvement was not observed for the progressive items in any group, both experimental groups (PI, TI), but not the control group, showed a significant improvement in accuracy rates for the resultative items after the treatment. For the TI group, a long-term effect was also observed. Based on these results and data from a follow-up questionnaire, the role of explicit form-focused instruction is discussed as well as the challenges and potential relevance of applying prototype instruction (i.e., cognitive approach) to second language pedagogy.
