Abstract
Tinnitus Activities Treatment (TAT) was developed at the University of Iowa in the 1980s to help patients manage their bothersome tinnitus. Three goals are targeted in TAT: (1) to provide counseling on tinnitus and related problems, (2) to suggest coping strategies, and (3) to recommend partial masking using sound therapy. TAT is unique because it uses picture-based counseling materials with images and charts that are helpful illustrations of complex concepts and ensure sessions proceed in an orderly manner. We suggest using the Tinnitus Primary Functions Questionnaire to determine the sessions that are relevant for the patient and to document treatment effectiveness. TAT offers content for the four areas that are impacted by tinnitus including thoughts and emotions, hearing and communication, sleep, and concentration and includes an introduction and summary session. We include homework and practice activities with each session to allow patients to practice the suggested strategies. Through TAT, we advocate for a collaborative and holistic approach to helping patients manage their tinnitus by listening to the patient, understanding their needs, and providing directive counseling to address their concerns. Nurturing patient expectations and providing hope are essential to the therapeutic process.
