Abstract

Predominant models of critical literacies research that address trans phenomena rely on queer theory, rather than trans studies scholarship, to advocate for social transformation. Addressing this misalignment, this chapter advances an additional apparatus through which critical literacies research might explore gender. Following a short literature review detailing the state of trans studies in critical literacy, the chapter presents three micro-cases focused on materiality, embodiment, and affect. These findings are drawn from a narrative inquiry study that chronicled the implementation of a state-wide omnibus and anti-trans bill in the US state of Iowa. The chapter concludes by arguing 1) for increased inclusion of trans studies in critical literacies research and 2) for future scholarship that explores trans studies and queer theory as complementary analytic apparatuses for studying gender and self-determination in critical literacies research.
