Abstract

In this chapter, I discuss the commonalities and potential synergies between universal design for learning and culturally relevant/sustaining pedagogies. I propose that the following principles are supported by these asset-based pedagogical frameworks: (a) student autonomy and choice should guide the learning process, (b) a teacher’s role should be to coach or facilitate collaborative music-making and learning, (c) the valid and valued modalities of musical participation should include multi-instrumentalism/vocalism and music technology, and (d) music pedagogy and curricula should embrace counterhegemonic elements of popular and hip-hop music and culture. I then discuss possibilities for teaching and implementing these pedagogical approaches in instrumental methods courses. I describe a series of assignments that I use in my instrumental methods course as examples of these principles in practice and as one way to help prepare preservice music teachers to teach diverse groups of learners.
