Abstract
The presence and impact of social media have evolved as a vital component of social work practice. Even if the practicing social worker elects not to make active use of any of the popular social media platforms, best practice requires an understanding of how clients use social media, and how social media impacts communities and policies. General categories of social media use include advocacy, personal networking, professional networking, and education. This chapter will discuss the current definitions of social media as a practical application for social work practice, current uses, and case examples of challenges and strengths. While the nature of social media design, trends in use, and larger policy changes move quickly, this chapter will discuss components of social media from a general social work practice lens. New platforms emerge, and legacy applications lose popularity. The discussion here may rely upon applications as examples that are no longer in wide use.
