Abstract
A mentor once told me to read certain scholars as models of good academic writing. This was a practical suggestion to help me start a dissertation, but it emphasized the link between thinking and writing. Years later a student asked me for examples of good writing in Spanish. Jaime Concha’s name sprang immediately to mind. Concha is among the Hispanists in the US academy whose work can be identified on the basis of style alone, but this unique form of expression can be thought of as part of his engagement with writing about history. Historical change stresses the load-bearing terms
