Abstract
In such brief space, there’s a lot that will inevitably be left out of a commentary on Jayne Cortez’s masterful poem “She Got He Got.”¹ One aspect of her spectacular artistry is her refinement of our understanding of what the list poem can do. Each line in “SGHG” is crystalline on its own yet heightens tension between lines and throughout the entire poem in context. Who’s “she” and who’s “he”? What does degree mean in the poem? Relativism and abstraction work to great effect in this work.
