Abstract
Bryant reviews Johnson's book (University of Georgia Press).
As if to turn [La Donna]'s story on its head, "Clay's Thinking," focuses on young photo film technician and aspiring musician Clay, and his dawning awareness that he was played as a sex object by Mirabella, a lovely older woman who has him spun. Even in their naming, the power dynamic is clear: Clay's sexual persona is shaped by Mirabella's gaze; even his nickname for her, Mira, is Spanish for the word "look." The occasional presence of her other lover complicates matters. [Dana Johnson]'s confident use of language gives the piece its realness and, with the exception of the stilted "Bars," doesn't fail her throughout the book.
