Abstract
This is a review of the book, "Family Support Programs and Rehabilitation: A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to Traumatic Brain Injury" (see record
1995-98289-000). Traumatic brain injury rarely affects only the person who sustained the neural damage; it also presents the families of these patients with a daunting challenge that may extend for decades following the injury. This volume provides a contribution that will be welcomed by these families and the rehabilitation professionals working with them. Step-by-step compensatory procedures are described for managing impairments of memory, social competency, emotional adjustment, and other sequelae of traumatic brain injury. Directed at a wide audience of professionals and laypersons involved in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, the book emphasizes relatively simple, straightforward procedures applicable in the home setting. Although this volume cannot substitute for the comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment program that every traumatic brain injury patient would receive in an ideal world, the interventions are described in sufficient detail and largely stripped of obfuscating jargon, resulting in a uniquely valuable resource for those families left to their own devices due to their geographic location or limited insurance policy. Also, graduate students in clinical neuropsychology, rehabilitation, and related fields will find a concise introduction to the pragmatic aspects of several behavioral interventions for patients with traumatic brain injury.
