Abstract
Drs Smolin, Tabbara, and Whitcher have written a short, easy-to-read monograph that provides a systematic approach to all aspects of infectious ocular disease. The book is divided into seven chapters, each of which covers a discrete anatomic region. Within each chapter, a general discussion precedes a detailed discussion of both common and rare pathogens.The chapter about corneal infections contains one of the most comprehensive yet concise discussions of this topic we have seen. An excellent presentation of the workup, differential diagnosis, and selection and modification of antimicrobial coverage for bacterial, fungal, and herpetic infections appears in a clear and clinically useful format. There are similar excellent discussions about conjunctival infections, lid infections, and endophthalmitis. Interesting (and hard-to-find) information about unusual scleral infections is also included.There are very few weaknesses of this textbook.
