Abstract
Other chapters use similar examples: in human development, integrating child care with preschool education and K-12 educational programs, creating equity in opportunities; in economic development, using policy analysis to consider the health effects of economic policy; and in community development, integrating activities of public health agencies and community development agencies. Policies that enhance the health care infrastructure through sustaining local services such as hospitals and clinics, including those that serve the poor and underserved, will contribute to the other policy domains: to economic development, because of direct and indirect spending (including intergovernmental transfers) that generates additional economic activity; to human development, through mitigating the effects of ill health; and to community development, by providing social capital in the presence of health care professionals who are often active in organizations promoting the community.
